Where the data travels

File data and connection data follow different paths

The system never relays file bytes through the VPS. If the browsers cannot establish a direct connection, the transfer reports that it cannot connect.

File dataSender device → recipient device

Sent through a DTLS-encrypted WebRTC data channel and checked for completeness before success is shown.

Temporary connection dataUses the VPS only to establish the connection

Uses a room code, device name and the network information needed for the browsers to find each other. It does not include file contents.

VPS resourcesNo file transfer or storage

The VPS uses a small amount of CPU, memory and network traffic to serve the page and coordinate the connection. File size does not consume VPS disk storage.

How does it work?

Send files directly in three steps

Both devices must keep this page open and stay online at the same time so the file can travel directly between them.

Privacy by design

  • PDFdee does not receive or store file contents
  • The room link is a temporary connection key
  • There is no file relay server fallback

How to use Direct File Transfer

  1. 1The sender selects the file.
Create a link or QR Code for the recipient.
  2. 2Recipient requests connection
The sender checks the device name and presses to approve.
  3. 3Direct browser
Check the completeness of the file when finished.

Frequently asked questions

Does PDFdee store my files?

No. The VPS only helps the devices connect using temporary room data; it does not receive file contents. After completion, the connection closes and the old room link cannot receive the files again.

Is the file encrypted in transit?

Yes. WebRTC data channels automatically protect data between the devices with DTLS. The sender should verify the device name before approval and share the room link only with the intended recipient.

How large can a transfer be?

The initial total limit is 2 GB on computers, 500 MB on Android and 250 MB on iPhone or iPad. These limits reduce memory pressure and the risk of the operating system closing a tab. Actual performance depends on both connections.

Why must the sender keep this page open?

The recipient receives data directly from the sender’s device. Closing the page, turning off the device or losing the internet connection stops the transfer.

What happens if the devices cannot connect?

The page suggests changing networks or disabling a VPN. It never uses the VPS as a file relay, so some corporate networks or restrictive firewalls may not support the transfer.

Which VPS resources are used during a transfer?

The VPS serves the page and exchanges temporary connection data, using a small amount of CPU, memory and network traffic. It does not receive file contents, store them on disk or use VPS bandwidth to carry the file.
